Diabetes

Diabetes is a chronic and progressive disorder that impacts upon how the body utilizes the sugar it gets from food. Diabetes is marked by high levels of sugar in the blood called as hyperglycemia. The food (carbohydrate) we eat breaks down into simple sugar and it also produces a hormone called insulin that signals body’s cell to uptake glucose from blood. In diabetes, the body either stops making or utilizing insulin or both leading to increased levels of sugar in the blood. There are two types of diabetes viz; Type 1 diabetes (the body doesn't make enough insulin or stops making it) and Type 2 diabetes (the body's cells don't respond to insulin i.e. insulin resistance).

Raised blood sugar levels lead to many uncomfortable symptoms like:

  • Excessive thirst
  • Excessive hunger
  • Frequent urination
  • Blurred vision
  • Fatigue

If the blood sugar levels stay uncontrolled leads to long-term complications like damage to eyes (retinopathy), nerves (neuropathy) and kidneys (nephropathy),  foot problems (due to poor circulation and nerve damage) and impotence (again due to poor circulation and nerve damage).

Type 2 diabetes is often called a disease of lifestyle because it is associated with being overweight or obese, lack of physical exercise, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and poor diet, all factors that involve lifestyle choices.

One can manage their type 2 diabetes by controlling their weight, diet, and exercising regularly. Some may need to take a medication that supports their body utilize insulin better, or start with direct insulin shots.
